The events of the last eighteen months have highlighted what our students value most and what they have been missing. As we look ahead to a new academic year, we hope to provide better resources and studios, educational events, collaborative opportunities, and most importantly, scholarships to those in need of support. When you designate your #TheStateDay gift to the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, you are providing our faculty and students with what they need to continue innovating and creating.
We rely on donations from alumni and friends to:

EXPANDING POSSIBILITIES IN THE GEORGIA STATE CERAMICS PROGRAM
The Ceramics program at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design is raising funds to purchase a gas kiln that will allow students to work on a larger-than-life scale. It will open up opportunities for all students who take ceramics classes, but will have the most impact on the graduate program, where our students consistently desire to work at a large, ambitious scale, inspired by the work of faculty Christina West.
Our students who want to work large currently segment their sculptures into pieces to fit them into the kiln. This leads to lots of technical problems as the clay moves and warps during the firing and the pieces never really fit together as well as they would like. Other students simply keep the scale of their work small enough to fit in the kiln, but we would like them to have the opportunity to push that aspect of their work while they’re in the program. This kind of large scale kiln is common in other competitive ceramics programs in the country—the kiln addition to the studio will help us continue to recruit the best students.
The kiln donation would further benefit students through the installation process. The program would not buy a kiln, but opt to have one custom-built on-site as a part of a kiln building class for students, providing practical art skills for the future.
Our ceramics program is a thriving and continually growing cohort with aspirations beyond what our current studio resources can support. Please join alumni and friends in making a gift to the Ceramics program as part of Georgia State Day 2021.
When you give to the College of the Arts, and specifically to the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, you are helping us offer competitive scholarships to the brightest and most talented students, recruit and retain a stellar faculty, and support artistic and scholarly opportunities for both.
